3 Grooming Rules For Men

Choose Your Haircut Wisely

The general rule? Keep your style short, unless you’re going for that California surf-vibe. As a rule of thumb, short styles reduce the appearance of thinning and give your hair lift to make it look more voluminous. We’re digging these easy options:

The Buzz Cut. This is a great option for those experiencing thinning hair, but the clean-shaven look is too severe. If you want something simple and sleek, the buzz cut is a great option. The style is an especially good way to hide the fact that your hair is starting to thin on your crown or near your hairline since hair overall is less noticeable. The buzz cut gives you a clean, yet edgy look that makes everyone pay attention to you.

The Short Caesar Cut. You hear right. This look is inspired by the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar, but you probably know it best as George Clooney’s haircut. The Caesar cut is a stylish way to conceal a receding hairline and a thinning crown, thanks to discreetly styled bangs. The Caesar Cut features bangs which are cut with a horizontal fringe and styled forward.

The Roger Sterling Cut. This one’s that 60’s, dapper “Mad Men” look, otherwise known as  Roger Sterling’s hairstyle. It’s a great style option for men who have a receding hairline but still grow healthy hair on the crown of their head. For this option, ask your barber to cut short on the top, but leave it long enough so that you can comb a part on the side of your head, leaving the sides tight. Most importantly, make sure the barber tapers the sides so they blend in nicely with the top.

Give Yourself Trims (1x weekly)

We don’t recommend you trim your haircut, but we also know you’re growing a lot more hair on your face, sideburns, and neck in the meantime! One of the easiest ways to stay looking well groomed between barbershop appearances is to remove excess hair beyond your hairline with clippers or a razor.

For those growing beards or mustaches, a weekly trim is necessary to keep it in check. Simply grab your beard trimmer to go over everything lightly (here’s one we like).

Pro Tip: Make your edges are neat and crisp, like your sideburns and where your beard stops on your neck. That’s the true mark of a crisp, cleaned man!

Grab Your Tweezers

The unibrow is a thing of the past; tame unruly eyebrows and other unwanted hair (ears and nose!) with a good pair of slant tweezers. For this grooming task, there’s no need to go crazy shaping your brows, this is a matter of tackling the center monobrow. You want controlled chaos.

To go from one brow to two, it’s pretty simple.

  1. Start above your nose at the center of your face between your eyes, where a bunch of peach fuzz and hairy stragglers have formed a bridge.
  2. Using the flat edge of your tweezers, grasp hair as close to the skin as possible, and pull. Always pull hairs in the direction of hair growth to avoid breakage!
  3. Remove hair until a space about the width of your thumb has been cleared.
  4. Apply a cold washcloth to close the pores. If your skin feels itchy or looks a little red, apply a dermatologist-tested lotion.
