Many hair growth products contain biotin, but how do they work?

How Does Biotin Work?

Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin of the B family also called vitamin H or coenzyme R. Dried brewer's yeast and egg yolk are rich sources of this vitamin. A deficiency of biotin causes an uncommon form of progressive demyelinating polyneuropathy with proximal muscle weakness, underdevelopment or absence of tibia, ulcers on the soles and dermal changes on the hands and feet (siderosis bulosa) . This disease can be cured by administering high doses of biotin 10mg per day for several months up to one year.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) set by the FDA is 30 micrograms per day for an adult. Biotin can also be found in some foods such as cauliflower, peanuts, turnips, avocado, yeast extracts and soy flour.

Daily intakes of 30 micrograms of biotin will prevent a deficiency in healthy individuals. Biotin's hair growth effects are therefore likely due to its role in cell metabolism (fatty synthesis) and protein production (keratin). Hair growth in men occurs at a rate of approximately 1cm per month, or in women at around half that rate.
