Leading hair loss causes for women

Hair loss is an embarrassing, yet common problem for women across the board. And the reason behind it can range anywhere from super simple and short lasting to super complicated, with other health conditions behind it.

Luckily, there are a lot of different treatments available for women when it comes to hair loss. The only thing is, you just have to find the cause behind it.

Here are the leading reasons behind hair loss in women – and what you can do to fix it.

1. Physical stress

Stress is unhealthy in a lot of different ways – it can really harm your health, and according to research, your hair as well. Any time you’ve deal with a physical stressor or trauma, such as a car accident or a surgery, you may find yourself losing some hair.

To make a long story short, hair has a whole process it goes through – it grows, it rests and then it sheds. But when you have a stressful event occur in your life, it’s going to jolt that hair cycle, meaning hair will go into the shedding phase a lot faster.

The good news here is that this process is generally over in a few months. In as little as three months, you may not notice your hair falling out anymore. As your body gets back to normal, your hair will too.

2. Pregnancy

Unfortunately, a lot of women discover this is true after they give birth. Giving birth is a traumatic event on your body, and it could have an effect on your hair. Most women have the hair loss after the baby has been born, not before or during.

However, doctors will assure you that it will grow back in just a few short months.

3. Vitamin A overload

There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Getting too much vitamin A in your diet can actually jumpstart hair loss. The American Academy of Dermatology found this to be true. 

To avoid this from happening, aim for about 5,000 International Units of vitamin A in a day. Once you get a hold of how much vitamin A you’re taking in during a day, the hair will start growing back.

4. Not enough protein

On the flip side of the scale, if you don’t get enough protein on a daily basis, your body is going to suffer. The way your body reacts to not getting enough protein is by rationing it and turning off the hair growth. In fact, you may not notice you have a drop in protein until two to three months later, which is when symptoms can start to pop up.

Easy solution: Try incorporating fish, eggs and meat into your daily routine. You can also research a bunch of different vegetarian and vegan protein sources, such as tofu.

5. It’s in your genes

Some of us are blessed with good genes, while others … not so much. If you have female-pattern hair loss in your genes, this means that baldness runs in your family. So if you find your relatives losing hair at a specific age, you may be facing it yourself.

If you have this gene in your family, you can use minoxidil, better know as Rogaine, to help assist your hair to grow. At the very least it will help maintain where your hair is right now.

6. Hormones

You may have guessed this from the pregnancy hair loss, but changes in hormones can significantly impact your hair.  Going on or off birthday control or any change in hormones can trigger major hair loss.

Try to fix this by keeping an eye on your routine and seeing what’s new, whether you switched something out or added something new, and adjust accordingly.
