Recently Japanese scientist claims that they’ve succeeded in developing a new way of growing hair follicles even at a higher speed than other methods. The research was published in the journal Biomaterials.
Professor Junji Fukuda led the research team at the Yokohama National University. They succeed in cultivating 5k follicles those were enough to replenish hair; whereas the existing laboratory method can only produce 50 or less at a time on that given days.
The team studied the cultivation of hair follicles germs using by 2 types of cells that were placed in silicon (dimethylpolysiloxane) containers. These follicles germs are the source of tiny organs that help to grow and sustain scalp hair.
The scientist also added present hair treatment use the back hair of the head and plant them to frontal areas with hair loss. Thus it failed to increase the total number of hair follicles or hair. And yes, few other treatments can slow down the hair loss process.
The professor said this new technology might need another 10 long years (!) to be available for people who are dreaming to get rid of polished plates and thinning thatches.
A research team of Yonsei University led by Professor Choi Kang-yeol claims that they have found an important protein named CXXC-type zinc finger protein 5 (CXXC5) to be held responsible for androgenetic alopecia.
The South Korean scientist said this could be the end of male and female pattern baldness or thinning patches.
This protein mostly controls the other protein functions and other hair regeneration substances-- the researcher added.
This protein acts as a negative regulator on the Wnt/β-catenin pathway (controls the activity of embryonic and adult stem cell populations) that is linked to hair regeneration and scalp’s wound healing that might lead to developing new follicles.
When this protein binds with Dishevelled (another kind of protein) restrict hair follicles to develop. The team developed a biomaterial PTD-DBM to interference with the binding process. When this biomaterial is being applied in the bare skin of bald mice for 28 days new follicles develop.
The team achieved a stronger result when they combined wound-induced hair neogenesis with PTD-PBM and valproic acid. Thus it was used topically to activate the Wnt/β-catenin pathway.
Actually, the process works in three ways.
First- the wound stimulates the follicles generation,
Secondly- valproic acid induces the cell pathway (linked to the development of follicles)
And Thirdly- PTD-PBD inhibits prevents CXXC5 from interfering follicular development process.
Finally, this treatment procedure yet to pass the human safety as it still didn’t test clinically to determine their safety issues. Currently, the further researches are going on and they are testing their findings on animals to determine whether there could be any toxic results before applying on a human.
Dr. Cheng-Ming Chuong, professor of pathology and his team reported developing a new means by which hair follicles might be grown from skin cell reproduction in the laboratory.
The research outlines showed a step by step procedure to reproduce follicles from the skin.
The team was able to uncover the major molecular functions that play a vital role in developing new hair, skin. It was tested on adult mice. The doctor also said as individuals adults they starting losing the cell regenerating ability. But he was happy that his research team was able to produce new cells and hair on adult mice.
Just to add the research was funded by National Institutes of Health and it was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
But University of Southern California (USC) did not confirm any news regarding the testing the process over a human. Seems like, we have to wait a couple of more years to see whether this cell transplant works well to cure baldness. If scientists win this challenge in regenerating patient’s own stem cells to grow skin with hair follicles in a lab, and later on transplanting them into his/her bald area of the scalp, would be a revolutionary invention in the history of modern hair care.
Concurrently there are more researches are going on by various scientist and research agencies regarding new hair follicles’ development. But all are in the developed stages or at least hair regrowth clinical trials findings are limited to mice only for the moment.
So, actually, right at this moment there are no scientific breakthroughs (no proven strategy that worked over human) that can clearly state to be successful about growing new hair follicles. But there’s hope. If you have been losing hair or if you think if you are at the risk of hair loss then there might be some alternative solution that might reduce the process and reactivate the dormant follicles.

There are actually four stages of the hair growth cycle. These are the anagen, catagen, telogen, and exogen.

The phase lasts for 3 to 5 months depending on the individual.
Normally a person’s 10 to 20% of his or her hair remains at the Telogen phase, at a time. If a person’s physical or other biological problems leads to pushing more hair follicles towards Telogen or resting phase that will result in hair shedding problem.
As soon as the new hair has grown from that cell the old hair enters into the Exogen phase. The old hair falls out usually when we brush or wash our hair. That’s the reason dermatologist says it’s normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs every day. New hair pushes the old hair to fall out. So there is nothing to be worried.
So just like the other part of our body, it’s important that our hair growth cycle should be run at natural velocity and portion, and without disruption. But this cycle also interrupts by several external factors.
The male pattern baldness happens due to the cause of the resting phase (catagen) when more and more hair follicles enter into the resting phase and miniaturization happening at the follicular level.
And after a certain period eventually hair follicles fall out and nothing grows back.
Since there is no solid evidence based on which you can say that new hair follicles can be grown even after follicles has been closed, disappeared and not generating new hair years after years but yes, if the follicle is still intact, it’s quite possible to stimulate that follicle’s health.
And as long as your hair loss is not caused by inherited factors or severe scarring, there are chances you can repair your damaged hair follicles.
